A Eastern North American native deciduous shrub that is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils, although they have a wide range of soil tolerance including boggy soils. An upright, spreading habit with glossy green foliage and white Spring flowers that give way to black Fall berries and fantastic purple-red Fall color. Fruits are sometimes used to make tasty jams and jellies. Ideal in a mass in shrub borders, small gardens or woodland areas. Its tolerance to wet conditions makes it suitable for growing on the margins of ponds or streams.
