Herbaceous perennial native to Eastern North America and makes the ideal plant in the Spring Woodland garden and shady borders. Flowers bloom April to June starting with a pure white and acquiring pink tones with age. Flowers give way to berry-like capsules and seeds are then disbursed by ants. Foliage will usually die to the ground by late summer, particularly if soils are allowed to dry. Prefers deep, rich, humusy, moist but well-drained soils. Needs regular watering. Apply leaf mulch in fall. Rhizomatous plant that will gradually spread. This flower does not transplant well.
