A low maintenance clump-forming herbaceous perennial. A groundcover that is slow to spread but overtime creates colonies with spidery lavender-violet blooms in May with a bronze new leaf that turns to an attractive medium-green foliage and a red in the Fall. Tolerates dry, shallow-rocky soil once established because the rhizomes hold moisture. Can be semi-evergreen in zones 6 and up, any foliage that does survive winter should be cut back in late winter prior to emergence of new growth. Ideally used enmasse in woodland gardens, wild gardens or naturalized areas. Also effective in partially shaded areas of rock gardens and border fronts. Grows well under trees. Great as an edger for paths and walkways. Rabbit, Deer, Drought, and Heavy Shade tolerant.
