Grows best in rich soil with constant moisture, with soil never being dried out. Spreads by underground rhizomes that form dense colonies. It is best to avoid windy sites. Upright deciduous fern with fiddleheads appearing in spring. Ideally used in woodland gardens or along streams and ponds. Matches well with Astilbes and Hostas.
