A native deciduous tree with bright red new foliage which turns to a dark green during the growing season, followed by yellow, orange, and violet Fall color. Has heavily textured dark brown-black bark with small ornamental black fruit that is loved by birds. Tolerates road salt. Prefers deep, acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Can tolerate dry spells and heavy moisture. Apply fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Prune for shape and structure in winter. Ideal as a coastal tree, Wet areas, Wildlife garden, and Woodland garden.
